Many of my patients ask can a chiropractor help with Scoliosis, particularly if they should bring their children in for treatment when they find out they have scoliosis. We want to make sure you have all the information you need so that you can make an educated decision. After all, these are your kids, and you should do your due diligence.
The first thing you should know is that chiropractic care is definitely safe for a patient with scoliosis, even for patients with curves over 20, 30 or 40 degrees. We will change the way we approach treatment, either with manual manipulation (adjustments) or with an activator/impulse tool, depending on the severity of the curve and the age of the patient. The second thing you should know is that there is no medical treatment to reduce scoliosis curvatures. The objective of bracing is to stop further progression of the curve and avoiding compression of internal organs as a result side bending and lateral curvatures. Third, there are a few studies demonstrating reductions of the curvatures by 3 to 15 degrees in 66% of the patients. This is for young patients and older patients that are not in the growing years. Studies about Chiropractic Patients with Scoliosis Study number 1 Outcomes for Adult patients over a 24-month treatment with chiropractic manipulation. Study number 2 Adolescent study for treatment with chiropractic Chiropractors definitely can and should treat patients with Scoliosis. Results are favorable and better than conventional medical treatment. Be sure to see a chiropractor familiar with treatment protocols for patients with Scoliosis. Even when patients have started medical care; bracing or physical therapy will likely benefit from treatment even though it won't cure the condition. A chiropractic patient will likely have a reduction in the curve and reduced pain and better mobility. Physical therapy is usually complimentary and will aid in the strengthening of associated muscles.

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM, or light therapy) has become an increasingly popular topic since the introduction of laser therapies.
We we know about light therapy and the effects it has on our mood. Seasonal affected disorders (SAD) is a well know issue for those living in the north during the winter. We know our plants are sad too when they have too much or too little light. White lights often keep people up too late at night, blue lights can be used to sanitize but what about other parts of the light spectrum. In this case, red and near-infrared light is used where injuries or degeneration has occurred. Benefits of Photobiomodulation Therapy One nice thing about this treatment is that it is drug free and non-invasive. There is research supporting the idea that PBM can help with a number of things, including:
It is well know that sunlight first thing in the morning helps to set your circadian rhythms. This light is a full spectrum of colors that is filtered by the atmosphere during the early hours. This is a healthy and free way to get exposure and help to promote good sleep patterns and help your body manufacture Vitamin D, which is low in most people. For more information on laser therapy visit the Erchonia site here. My son is graduating from college with his bachelors degree in exercise science. He will be starting chiropractic college soon. We eagerly look forward to him coming to northern California in a few years, and practicing here as a chiropractor in Roseville. I'm so fortunate to have a career that I can now share with my boy.
As an experienced chiropractor in Roseville, I have a little bit of advice for him, and to other graduates (from high school or college, regardless of their desired career path): find a job or career that you love, and then make sure you continue to love what you do. A great way to maintain that passion is by helping others along the way. And you don't have to love everything about a job. It doesn't have to be your one, true job. You just have to have reasons for loving it. For example, for me, a big motivator is I love helping people to get relief from pain. I also find the actual work to be interesting. The social aspect is also a bonus. Recognizing the good and being mindful of it will allow you to get through the unpleasant aspects of the job. But that's not all. I have more advice and the excellent aspect of this counsel is that is is fairly easy to follow. Share your talents in your work, be kind, and be sure to smile - lots of people are having a bad day, on any given day - give them the break you want when you're having a bad day. Give of yourself and whatever you do will give back. #MyAdviceToGraduates Dr. Scott Owens Pregnancy can add a little difficulty to an otherwise busy schedule.
