Questions & Answers About Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine sterile needles into specific sites on the body. This promotes the body’s natural healing power and helps to restore health.
What can I expect?
An initial exam will be taken, including questions regarding symptoms, health, and life-style will be asked. The acupuncturist may also check pulses, the tongue, and conduct an appropriate physical exam. After this, a traditional Chinese diagnosis will be given, and you may receive an acupuncture treatment and/or a traditional Chinese herbal formula (traditional Chinese herbal formulas are an additional cost).
What should I expect during treatment?
When the acupuncture needle is inserted, occasionally you may experience a slight discomfort (some people describe it like a hair being pulled or a quick bee sting) which then goes away quickly. After that you may experience heaviness, tingling, or a dull ache at the site of insertion. The needles are usually left in for 20 to 30 minutes and most patients fall asleep.
